Relations between Embassy of India and Embassy of Panama are cordial and friendly since 19th Century when Indians went to work on the construction of Panama Railroad and Panama Canal. Diplomatic relations between India and Panama were established during the Prime Ministership of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962. The relations between Indian Embassy and Embassy of Panama were strengthened when Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) was launched in 1964 with the objective of assisting and extending cooperation in the Commonwealth Countries of Asia, Africa, East Europe and Latin America. However, full-fledged Embassy of India was opened in 1973, while Panama Embassy in India was opened in 1981. Both the Embassy of India and Embassy of Panama are promoting the tourism and trade relations while the Indian IT companies like Infosys and I-flex are planning to set up an IT Training Centre in Panama.
