Indian Embassy in Melbourne, Australia

Working of Indian Embassy in Melbourne, Australia and Australian Embassy in India is the result of old relations between India and Australia dating back to the 18th century. However, the full diplomatic relation between Indian Embassy in Melbourne and Australian Embassy was established during the period of Jawaharlal Nehru and the first Indian High Commissioner was sent to Australia in 1946. Both Embassy of India and Embassy of Australia share much in common like both are members of commonwealth, Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation (IORARC), having parliamentary democracy, legal and human rights, free press, financial and government institutions etc. in common. From 2000 onwards, the visit of Australian Prime Minister and a series of Minister-level visits between the two Governments strengthened the relations between the Embassy of India and Embassy of Australia.
