Srinagar, indisputably a fascinating summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir placed which is rightly placed in the midst of the Kashmir Valley. Founded around 150 AD by King Pravarasen II, Srinagar is located on the banks of the river Jhelum. It is a wonderful destination which is known as heaven of India. Srinagar has a unique place in the history of ancient India which still holds many valued evidences of ancient settlements dating back to 5,000 years. Shikara, the houseboats, is a paradise for tourists that can be used in Jhelum River to move around the picturesque valleys in the backdrop of Himalayan range hillocks.
The Mughal rulers built the Mughal Gardens which enriches the beauty of the city. Superb resorts, handcrafted souvenirs and water sports activities are other major attractions of Srinagar.

The erstwhile history of Srinagar is quite interesting that takes you back to 3rd century B.C, when it was part of the Mauryan Empire. After the introduction King Asoka, Srinagar became a hot seat of Buddhism. Then, the city came under the ruling of the Kushans in the 1st century. During the reigns of Mihirkula of the Huns dynasty, the city is believed to have witnessed the heights of trepidation.

Before the city came under the rule of the Mughals in the 14th century, Buddhists and Hindu kings were the rulers. After tricking the then ruling King Yusuf Shah Chuk, Akbar tried to gain control of the city and was gained successful in establishing the Mughal Empire in Srinagar along with several parts of the Kashmir alley.

After the loosing war by Aurangzeb in 1707, the control of the city was handed over to the Pashtun tribes and the Durrani Empire, who ruled here for many decades. In the year 1814 Raja Ranjit Singh defeated the city marking the onset of the Sikh rule in Kashmir.

In 1846, British marked a peace agreement with the Sikhs and established Gulab Singh as the independent ruler of Srinagar. Till independence, it was remained so when the government of India took Srinagar under its administration.

However, Kashmir valley has become a subject of conflict between India and Pakistan. Thus, various tribes like Pashtun got power and tried to grab the city.

Travel within city
There are various modes of transport through which you can visit in and around Srinagar. One can opt for the standard buses, cabs and government taxis, auto rickshaws and also hire cycles. The most scenic option to get around the city of Srinagar is to use several inter connected waterways and travel by boats.

Shikara boats are available in the place through which you can use these around the picturesque lakes. That would be the cheapest and easy accessible option that covers important places of interest in Srinagar.

Taxi is the most preferred option that is available from the airport and railway station. It usually plies from the airport which is 15 km from the city and charge around Rs 400 to reach the city.

Bus/Auto Rickshaw
As compare to other means of transport, Buses are frequent and are much cheaper. These are available from the railway station offering negotiation rates before hiring.

Rented Cycle
Hire Cycles can be a good option to travel around the city that will give a simple riding to the tourists.
